Since 1983, LEATHERMAN has been manufacturing multitools that are extremely durable and perfect for work. When Tim Leatherman and his business partner Steve Berliner founded the company with the Pocket Survival Tool (PST) multitool, they had no idea that one day more than 30 models would be manufactured in a 90,000-square-foot factory with more than 400 employees.
A native of Oregon, Tim Leatherman graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University in 1970. He then held a number of jobs, including positions as an English teacher and helicopter mechanic. He eventually spent his time traveling abroad devising the concept for a new universal tool. From the beginning, the company has been based on a simple philosophy: manufacture and deliver on time, fulfill customer wishes and listen to their needs, increase the efficiency of multitools, and provide a pleasant environment for its employees. Although Tim is now retired, he still visits the factory at least once a month, and both he and Steve play a key role in the direction the company is taking. Tim still makes many visits around the world to keep track of the distribution network.
