The competition between the USSR and the USA for space flight superiority. It started from launch of an artificial satellite in 1957, continued by robotic space probes to the Moon, Venus and Mars, culminating in sending humans into Earth's orbit and ultimately to the Moon. The 1975 Apollo-Soyuz space mission was a symbol of cooperation between the two sides and a finish to the space race.
