The Swiss Fortis Novonaut N-42 TR Halo Green F2040023 watch unmistakably embodies Fortis’s distinctive space-inspired design. Perfect readability, robustness, and durability are a given. It is the latest successor to the iconic B-42 Official Cosmonauts, this time featuring the improved WERK 17 TR movement.

The Fortis Novonaut N-42 TR Halo Green F2040023features a case made of recycled stainless steel, complemented by a rubber-nylon strap. Inside the case, the Swiss-made Fortis WERK 17 TR mechanical movement (manufactured for Fortis in collaboration with La Joux-Perret) operates reliably with automatic winding. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 half-vibrations per hour, features 28 jewels, and—as an improvement over the previous version—offers an extended power reserve of 70 hours. The movement also features improvements in escapement regulation and a bridge firmly anchored on both sides, resulting in even greater shock resistance. You can use the chronograph function with a minute counter at the 12 o’clock position and an hour counter at the 6 o’clock position. The movement also features a “hacking” function (stopping the seconds hand when setting the time) and the option of manual winding via the crown. At the 3 o’clock position, there is a practical date and day-of-the-week indicator. A bidirectional rotating ceramic bezel is used to measure time intervals.

The perfectly legible dial is protected by a sapphire crystal that is highly scratch-resistant. A double-sided anti-reflective coating ensures excellent readability even in direct sunlight. Visibility in the dark and in low-light conditions is provided by SuperLuminova luminescence, applied to the hands,the bezel, and—most importantly—across the entire surface of the dial using the special Lumicast® material. The dial is literally saturated with this pigment throughout its entire thickness, allowing it to absorb more light, providing greater luminosity, and preventing degradation. This model is water-resistant to 200 meters, so it can handle even more extensive contact with water, such as swimming or diving to a depth of approximately 20 meters. Water resistance is enhanced by a screw-down crown with a triple seal. Various versions of this model’s predecessor were used on numerous occasions during Roscosmos astronauts’ spaceflights.

The Fortis WERK 17 TR movement was developed and manufactured in collaboration with La Joux-Perret and is the first movement specifically designed and intended for use in space. In collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation, the movement was tested in the stratosphere, where thirteen unprotected watches were attached to a gondola mount. The gondola was carried into the stratosphere by a balloon filled with helium gas. Data was then recorded by a device located below it. Of course, the ultimate goal was not merely for the watches to survive in the stratosphere. Among other things,the watch must also maintain uninterrupted accuracy. But this is only the beginning of the Fortis WERK 17’s space mission. In collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation, this movement was sent 30 km into space, where it was verified that it could withstand harsh conditions such as microgravity, extreme temperatures, and radiation. This version, designated TR (Trägheitsregulierung), features an improved balance wheel regulation system. Instead of the classic regulating lever with a hairspring, the Werk 17 TR features a so-called free-sprung balance wheel with four regulating weights mounted directly on the balance wheel rim and a bridge firmly anchored on both sides. This results in even greater resistance to shocks and vibrations than its predecessor. Another improvement is the extension of the power reserve from 60 to 70 hours.

Note: Although the case size is 42 mm, the bezel extends 1 mm beyond the case, giving the watch the appearance of a 44 mm model.
