The Swiss Fortis Novonaut N-42 Amadee-24 Limited Edition F2040016 watches deny the specific cosmic handwriting of the Fortis brand. Of course, it is perfect in terms of clarity, robustness and durability. This watch can be used not only for space travel, but also for everyday wear. The first successor to the iconic B-42 Official Cosmonauts was unveiled in October 2023. The return of the legend was scheduled for Friday the 13th. This version was developed in 2024 for use in the AMADEE 24 project - a simulation of astronauts' stay on Mars, which took place in the Ararat province of Armenia. This model is available in a limited edition of only 100 pieces for the whole world.
The Fortis Novonaut N-42 Amadee-24 Limited Edition F2040016 watch has a case made of titanium, complete with a tension movement made of the same material. Fine adjustment of the bracelet length without the use of tools is made possible by a sliding mechanism on the clasp. A special black elastic nylon strap is also included . In the case, the Manufacture Swiss mechanical movement Fortis WERK 17 (made for Fortis in cooperation with the Manufacture La Joux-Perret) with automatic winding works reliably. It runs at a frequency of 28,800 semi-frequencies per hour, has 26 jewels and an extended power reserve of 60 hours. The stopwatch function can be used with a minute counter at 12 o'clock and an hour counter at 6 o'clock. The movement also has a "hacking" function (stopping the second hand when ordered) and the possibility of manual winding by the crown. At the 3 o'clock position we find a handy date and day of the week display. A bidirectionally rotating ceramic lunette, which is adapted for timekeeping, is used to measure time periods. Another interesting feature is the MCB™ (Mission Control Bezel) system - two additional lumi-dot hands on the lunette, spaced 10 minutes apart. In fact, the time delay in communication between Mars and Earth is just 10 minutes, so astronauts can track how long it will take for the next communication from ground control by simply turning the lunette.
The perfectly clear dial is protected by a sapphire crystal that is extremely scratch-resistant. The double-sided anti-reflective coating ensures excellent legibility even in direct sunlight. The SuperLuminova luminescence, located on the hands, indexes and lunette, allows readability in darkness and low-light conditions. The water resistance of this model is 200m, so it can handle even greater contact with water, such as swimming or diving to about 20m. The water resistance is supported by a screw-down crown with triple seals. Different versions of the predecessor of this model have been used many times during the flights of Roskosmos cosmonauts into space.
The Fortis WERK 17 has been developed and manufactured in collaboration with La Joux-Perret and is the first machine to be designed and manufactured specifically for use in space. In collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation, the machine was tested in the stratosphere with thirteen bare, unprotected watches attached to a nacelle mount. The gondola was carried into the stratosphere by a balloon powered by helium gas. The data was then recorded on the device below. Of course, the ultimate goal was not just the survival of the watch in the stratosphere. It was also a prerequisite, among other things, that the precision of the operation be undisturbed. But this is only the beginning of the Fortis WERK 17's space mission. In collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation, the movement was sent 30km into space, where it was tested to withstand harsh conditions such as microgravity, extreme temperatures and radiation.
This special edition was developed for use in the manned Mars mission simulation AMADEE 24, which took place in 2024 in Ararat Province, Armenia, and involved 6 specially trained OeWF analogue astronauts. The test site in Ararat province was chosen for its geological and topographical similarity to Mars. The astronauts were in complete isolation in a habitat in the Armenian desert during the mission. A dedicated mission support centre in Austria is in charge of communication with the outside world, and a ten-minute communication delay will be simulated. The Amadee-24 program was implemented by the Armenia Aerospace Agency. It is a project of the Austrian Space Forum, which is the only organisation in Europe and one of four worldwide developing spacesuit technology for human missions to Mars. The aim is to simulate surface activities on Mars.
Note: the size of the case is 42 mm, but the lunette extends 1 mm over the case, so the watch looks like a 44 mm watch.

The Swiss brand Fortis fully fulfills the meaning of its name, which means "strong" in Latin. It is synonymous with durability, robustness and reliability. Its purely mechanical watches serve professional pilots well, can be used underwater and have even served cosmonauts in space! In the years 1994-2019, Fortis watches were the official equipment of cosmonauts of the space agency Roskosmos. However, the foundations of Fortis' journey into space were already laid in 1961, when the founder's son Rolf Vogt showed the Fortis Spacematic AR (All Risks) watch to NASA astronauts. It was not until 1994 that the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph model looked into open space as part of the preparatory work for the historic connection of the American space shuttle Atlantis with the Russian MIR station.
Fortis is currently working with the Austrian Space Forum as the official timekeeper for the AMADEE Mars Mission simulation. From 2021, the Swedish Space Corporation became the official partner of Fortis in the testing and development of a purely space watch Fortis, where the stratospheric tests of the Werk 17 movement will be of particular interest.
The Fortis brand was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland in 1912 by Mr. Walter Vogt and, in addition to the already mentioned space successes, it has also achieved many other interesting milestones. In 1926, Fortis, in collaboration with the inventor of the first automatic movement, John Harwood, recorded the world's first serial production of a self-winding mechanical watch! Fortis introduced one of the world's first waterproof watches in 1940. Since 2018, its lifelong fan Jupp Philipp has become the owner of the Fortis brand.
Helveti.cz is an authorized dealer and specialist of the Fortis brand.
