The first nuclear powered submarine ever built, USS SSN 571 was the world's first operational nuclear powered submarine and the first submarine to complete an underwater circumnavigation of the North Pole on August 3, 1958. Due to its nuclear propulsion, the SSN 571 could operate for much longer than standard diesel-electric submarines. As a result, SSN 571 broke many records during her first few months at sea, primarily for length of uninterrupted service.
