At first glance, the German Laco Flieger Frankfurt 40 GMT Grau watch catches the eye with its striking sandblasted case and a design inspired by aircraft cockpit instruments. It is a modern take on a pilot’s watch with a GMT function, allowing you to keep track of up to three time zones simultaneously.

The sandblasted steel case of the Laco Frankfurt 40 GMT Grau is complemented by a black, water-resistant Fibertech strap. They are powered by the Laco 330 mechanical self-winding movement (based on the Sellita SW330-2 Elaboré—tested in three positions, accuracy of +/- 14 seconds per day) with a power reserve of approximately 56 hours. The movement, operating at a frequency of 28,800 half-vibrations per hour, features winding via the crown, ahacking function to stop the seconds hand when setting the time, a date display at the 6 o’clock position, and a GMT function, allowing the display of up to three time zones via a 24-hour hand and an internal rotating bezel controlled by the top crown (one of the videos explains how to set up to three time zones). Many will appreciate the solid screw-down case back featuring an embossed image of an airplane and the seconds hand tipped with the silhouette of an aircraft. This watch is water-resistant to 200 m(20 ATM), a feature supported by the screw-down crowns. The case diameter is 40 mm, and the lug-to-lug length is 47 mm, so the watch fits comfortably on most men’s wrists.

Classic features of the aviation-inspired Laco Frankfurt 40 GMT Grau include bold, easy-to-read hands and hour markers, easy-to-operate crowns, enhanced water resistance, and a screw-down case back. The perfectly legible dial is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating and high scratch resistance. Luminescent material applied to the hands, numerals, and hour markers ensures better readability in low-light conditions. The watch hands are heat-blued.

The watch comes in a special aluminum box with a “Remove before flight” keychain. The package also includes a two-piece nylon strap in a gray-and-orange color combination and a tool for changing it (a strap removal tool).

The design of th eLaco Frankfurt GMT series, from which the Frankfurt 40 GMT Grau model is derived, won the 2020 Red Dot Award for product design. The jury was impressed by the combination of a classic pilot’s watch with a modern concept designed for today’s travelers.
